The use of the word

Parish Court as the Clerk of the Courts and everyone else addresses the Bench. This is to ensure that there

is no appearance of familiarity with the Bench or worse yet, disrespect to the Court.



Canon VI of The Legal Profession [Canons of Professional Ethics] Rules which binds all attorneys with a duty





between clients to affect the relationship with fellow attorneys or his or her demeanour towards the opposing

party.

This is especially crucial in a criminal case. The Clerk of the Courts and the defence counsel often approach

the case from two divergent planes. The cut and thrust of a criminal trial may well see the trial deteriorate in

civility. Therefore, in an effort to maintain the highest level of propriety in the courts, it is useful to have some

Some Phrases in Addressing the Judge of the Parish Court

The many phrases listed below are used to address the Court respectfully and prevents the potential faux

pas of addressing the Parish Court Judge by name or by some other unsuitable greeting. These phrases are

liberally used by both Clerks of the Courts and defence attorneys.








