My interest in hermeneutics was largely formed through an encounter
with Richard Harvey Brown, a professor of social theory at the University
of Maryland, when I was an assistant professor at Howard University Law
School in Washington, D.C. I first chanced upon his essay ‘Social Theory as
Metaphor’, which piqued my interest. We arranged for a meeting and that
was the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Professor Brown steered me in
the direction of hermeneutics and referred me to the works of Hirsch and
Gadamer, and of several other theorists. He guided me in the writing of my
principal essay: ‘Legal Hermeneutics: A Philosophical Critique’. I will forever
be grateful.
In the preparation of the manuscript for publication, I have again returned
to the faithful: Dr Roy McCree, who gave his usual care and assistance in the
editing of the manuscript; Pat Worrell, who gave her usual excellent service
in typing the manuscript; and Amanda Byer once again assisted with the
preparation of the bibliography.
Finally, I wish to express my gratitude to the University of Oklahoma
Law Review, the Howard Law Journal, and the Caribbean Law Review for
permission to republish these essays. They are republished in the order in
which they originally appeared.
