The chapters of the book were first presented as papers during two
seminars – one held in Bristol, UK in November 2007, and the second
in San Juan, Puerto Rico in April 2008. These seminars and several
associated events were funded by the British Academy's UK-Latin
American/Caribbean Link Programme, and the editors would like to
thank the academy for its support. In addition, the financial and
administrative assistance of the University of the West of England (UWE)
and the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) has been much appreciated.
In particular, the faculty of Social Science and Humanities and the
Department of Politics at UWE, and the Office of the President of the
University of Puerto Rico, the Office of the Chancellor at UPR, Río
Piedras, the dean of the College of Business Administration, the dean
of the College of Social Sciences and the dean of the School of Law at
UPR, Río Piedras.
There are also a number of individuals the editors would like to
thank for their support. In particular, Rose West at UWE, for her
invaluable diligence, efficiency and good humour in helping to organise
the two seminars. At the UPR, we would like to thank Rebeca
Guadalupe, assistant to the dean for the Graduate School of Business,
whose conscientiousness contributed to the smooth organisation of
the Puerto Rico Seminar. Also, we send our thanks to Justin Daniel,
Jorge Duany and Lammert de Jong for their assistance in helping to
frame the scope of the two seminars and therefore the book. More
generally, there is a long list of other people who have provided timely
help, and these include Gordon Baker, Chris Bennett and the Caribbean
Council, Mark Duffield, Cecily Jones, Kate Quinn, Amanda Sives and
the Caribbean Studies Group of the Political Studies Association, Joanna
Sparks, Carmen Milagros Concepción, director of the Centre for Social
Research, and Luz del Alba Acevedo, director of the Department of
Political Science at UPR.
Finally, the editors would like to thank their families for their
support and encouragement during the course of this project.
